Don't Share, Don't Script, Don't Spread

There are certain things that we all do every day to protect our privacy: lock our homes and cars when we exit, keep our bank codes secret, avoid offers of rides from strangers. These habits have become second nature to most of us. Similarly, there are certain behaviors we should all adopt to keep us safe online. Recently we've come up with three golden rules of orkut safety: Don't Share, Don't Script, Don't spread (say it fast 3 times!). Some of it may seem obvious, so forgive me for sounding like your mother, but you'll really be better off knowing this.

1. Don't share: keep your username, password and personal information secret and change your password regularly.
2. Don't script: Never paste a URL or script into your browser while logged into orkut.com -- no matter what it claims to do. Don't click on links in emails that claim to be from orkut or Gmail. Scan your computer regularly for viruses, spyware, and adware.
3. Don't spread: Never enter your Google Account login and password on sites other than orkut.com and other Google properties. Never check "remember me" when you're on a shared computer.

If you want to learn more about staying safe on orkut, more tips are available in the orkut Privacy Security Center. Have a question about safety that isn't posted on our site? Ask in our orkut Help Group!

Thanks for Making Us #1!

Posted by Manu Rekhi, orkut India Product Manager

We Googlers tend to take a lot of pride in our cubes, decorating them with photos, souvenirs from trips, stuffed animals, and other fun stuff. Recently the orkut India team received a very exciting delivery which immediately scored a prime spot amongst our decor: an award plaque! Thanks to our loyal and active orkut Indian community, we are proud to announce that orkut won PC World India's Award for the "Best Social Networking Website." We're flattered and proud to have won, especially up against some stiff competition from a half dozen other great sites. The article explains that orkut's simplicity won the judges over: "In terms of user experience it is the easiest to navigate, with its straightforward, uncomplicated and clean interface." We plan to keep your orkut experience exciting and fun, and hope you are along for the ride.

An orkut User's Story

Posted on 11:15 AM by Unknown

While we get a kick out of building the orkut site, it's our users that truly make the product. It's those of you that find old friends, make new ones, stay in touch and share your lives on orkut every day that make spending time on orkut so exciting. On our site we offer you the chance to submit your orkut stories to us, and we get some truly amazing ones. This week we'd like to share a story that comes to us from Marta Serrat, an orkut user for the past 3.5 years.

"
Along with other orkut users, I used several orkut communities to get people involved in a campaign against violence, impunity, and corruption in Brazil. In 3 weeks,
we
managed to gather people in 21 cities all over the country, marching on simultaneous parades on 05/21/06. The event became known as the Brazilian Dignity Day."

If you have a story you'd like to share with us please submit it; who knows-- we might even post it on the blog!

orkut Feeds your Needs

Posted on 9:46 AM by Unknown

Over the years we have seen a lot of great ideas and requests come in through our help center. A lot of you have been asking for the ability to share more photos and to add blogs, and we've heard you. Rather than create a whole separate photo or blog feature, now you can bring in info from sites you already use, through feeds. Feeds make it easy for you to share your blog, photos, events, bookmarks and more through your orkut profile. You can pull in your blog from Blogger or LiveJournal, or your photos on Picasa Web Albums or Flickr, or your status from Twitter -- and the list goes on. Any sharing site that has feed capabilities (most do; check out your most-visited sites to find out), can be added to your orkut profile. Simply click on edit feeds in your left navigation, and type in the URLs for up to 5 sites. We make it even easier by auto-detecting if you have a Picasa Web Album or a Blogger blog. Once added, the titles of the feeds will show up on your profile so your friends can enjoy reading your blog, viewing your most recent photos, or checking out your favorite sites from right within orkut!
